Ingredients
For the Patty Melt
1lbGround beefCan substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
4slicesSliced bread (rye or sourdough)
4slicesCheese (Swiss or cheddar)You can experiment with different cheeses like pepper jack.
2tbspButterFor toasting the bread.
1cupOnions (caramelized)
to tasteSecret sauce (mayonnaise, ketchup, relish or similar)
Method
Preparation
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Shape the cooked beef into patties that fit the size of your bread.
In a separate skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the sliced bread and toast it on both sides until golden brown and crispy. Remove from skillet and set aside.
Assembly
To assemble, start with a slice of the toasted bread. Place a beef patty on top, followed by a generous slice of cheese, caramelized onions, and a schmear of your favorite secret sauce.
Top with another slice of toasted bread to complete the sandwich.
Cooking
Return the assembled sandwich back to the skillet. Cook on medium heat until the cheese is melted and the bottom slice of bread is crispy.
Carefully flip the sandwich and brown the other side.
Once both sides are golden and the cheese is gooey, slice the sandwich in half and serve hot.
If using leftovers, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet over low heat to preserve the crispy texture. For a vegetarian option, swap the beef for a portobello mushroom or a plant-based patty.
